- EN 1672-2 — Food processing machinery: hygiene requirements European standard defining hygiene design requirements for food processing machinery. Mandatory reference for CE-marked equipment in food applications.
- ISO 14159 — Safety of machinery: hygiene requirements International standard for hygiene requirements in machine design. Broader scope than EN 1672-2, covering machinery outside food processing including pharma and cosmetics.
- NSF International US certification body for food equipment and materials. NSF/ANSI standards are widely recognised by FDA and USDA for food contact compliance.
CIP & cleaning
- EHEDG Doc. 2 — CIP cleanability test method The standard method for assessing in-place cleanability of food processing equipment. Basis for EHEDG certification testing.
- EHEDG Doc. 8 — Hygienic design principles Covers surface roughness criteria, geometry requirements, and material selection for cleanable food equipment. Ra ≤ 0.8 µm requirement is defined here.
- VHVZ — Vereniging Hygiëne, Veiligheid en Zorg Dutch professional association for hygiene, CIP, and food safety engineering. Organises CIP design and validation training courses widely used in the Benelux food industry.

- ISPE — International Society for Pharmaceutical Engineering Primary professional organisation for pharma process engineers. Publishes GAMP guidelines, Baseline Guides for facility design, and CIP/SIP standards for regulated environments.
- ICH — International Council for Harmonisation Develops technical guidelines for pharmaceutical quality, safety, and efficacy. ICH Q7 (GMP for active substances) and Q9 (quality risk management) are relevant for process engineers.
- EMA — European Medicines Agency EU regulatory authority for medicines. EMA GMP guidelines cover equipment design, cleaning validation, and process validation requirements for pharmaceutical manufacturing.
